Keeping Your Dog’s Paws Clean and Healthy

How do you keep your dog’s paws clean between baths?

Whether you’re dealing with poor weather, allergies or simply cleaning off any outside irritants, here are some tips to consider.

Soaking Tips

  1. Soaking Station Believe it or not, soaking your dog’s paws is recommended at least once per day, unless your pup wears booties outside. To do this, you can set up a small soak/rinse station outside near an entrance to your home or in a mudroom. Your pup simply walks through the station, then onto a dry towel. If you’d rather use something more innovative, check out the Wild Heart Brushless Dog Paw Wash.
  2. Betadine Dr. Karen Becker uses over-the-counter betadine. Simply combine a couple inches of water with betadine to create an iced tea color, then soak for 2-5 minutes. Rinsing is not necessary, then pat dry.
  3. Keep it Simple Other combinations include:
    • Lemon juice and water
    • Castile soap and water
    • Dog shampoo and water

Wiping Tips

Soaking isn’t for everyone as some dogs correlate the soaking station for the much dread bath time. Using a basic towel or washcloth works just fine – just be sure to get into the crevices of the paws. You can also use disposable paw wipes, but we recommend avoiding the wipes with antibacterial/antifungal wipes because they can create an imbalance in your pup’s natural immune balance. Also, be sure to check out the Barkery’s Soothing Paw Balm.

Moisturize Sparingly

One of the potential side effects of soaking or wiping paws is that the paw pads can become cracked or irritated from the soaking solution, which can allow bacteria or fungi to invade your pup’s system. Your instinct might be to moisturize the pads to battle this effect, but take caution as the crevices between pads are typically pretty moist on their own. If you choose to moisturize, do sparingly and avoid the deep crevices.
