Keep Your Pet Safe & Comfortable this Winter

It’s a common question we’re asked here at the Barkery: How long can my pets be outside in the cold?

A general rule of thumb from most veterinarians: If the temperature drops below 20 degrees fahrenheit, it’s time to bring dogs and cats inside. If you have a puppy or kitten, 40 degrees is the minimum.

Thankfully, we have obtained several other tips from Pet Health Care Gazette . Among the tips:

  • Watch for signs of distress when pets are outside – a warning sign
  • Keep pets properly groomed so they can maintain their body heat
  • Antifreeze and ice melt compounds are toxic

Barkery Owner Delena Stout Featured in US News

Did you know that the Brookside Barkery and Bath was developed by Baby Boomers? OK, so this may not be big news, but when that business thrives and has been serving customers for over 10 years, it’s a big deal. And apparently US News agreed, and featured Barkery Owner Delena Stout in a recent article titled “Why Baby Boomers Can be Great entrepreneurs.

Aaron Guerrero notes, “Over the course of a decade, the Kansas City-based dog bath and all-natural pet food store has expanded to multiple locations, gained more than 25,000 customers and generated millions of dollars in profits.” Guerrero goes on to discuss Stout’s background as the bridge to where she and the Barkery are today.

Specific Breed Nutrition: A Case Study

If you’ve ever been to the Barkery, then you’ve definitely seen our sign out front: “Ask us why we don’t sell Iams, Eukanaba or Science Diet.”

It’s true: we only carry all-natural foods that do not contain any ingredients that were never meant for our pets to ingest. And for good reasons.

In a recent article from Truth About Pet Food, Susan Thixton takes a closer look at so-called breed specific pet foods and how the same brand compares across different countries. The results are surprising, showing that the same type of food by Royal Canin has different ingredients between the US, Canada, and the UK. The same goes for Science Diet. So, just how tailored to a specific dog breed are these foods? Not at all, it seems.

holiday-pet-safety-300x199The Pet Poison Helpline has issued a very helpful list of tips and reminders for pet owners this holiday season. What you believe is harmless may be just the opposite for your furry friend.

Included on the list:

  • Decorations: Such as snowglobes or tinsel, a danger for cats
  • Plants: Like poinsettias, holly, and mistletoe
  • Alcohol: Glasses left unattended can prove toxic for pets as well as desserts with the ingredient
